This is a copy of what was originally intended to be a one-off prototype we custom built for Greg Koch. Our goal was to capture that same amazing fuzz tone Jimmy Page was getting through his MKII during the early Yardbirds/Led Zeppelin, specifically on the album “Yardbirds Live at the Anderson Theater 1968” and we believe this particular pedal comes very, very close.  We use three 1960-era NOS Russian military-spec germanium transistors to get a truly wild and vintage sound.  Only a few of these are being made available here to the general public and this is the only place to get them!
Please note: This pedal is powered by its internal 9volt battery ONLY! To stay 100% true to its original “positive ground” PNP germanium transistor circuit, we have opted to not add the extraneous integrated chip circuitry “charge pump” that would isolate this from damaging your other pedals and power supply in your signal chain.  With that being said, the very low current draw from this circuit means a typical 9v battery can last many months, even up to a year, of normal use.

While we appreciate our good friend Gearmanndude showcasing the Freud, setting his DrZ to a slight crunch – while the proper setting for a conventional fuzz pedal – didn’t really do it justice here. By effectively having now two crunch ODs in series, this particular demo sounded a tad over-the-top IOHO. At the 5:37 mark you hear perhaps a closer taste of its intended tone when GMD briefly backs off his guitar volume. Freud’s strength comes from sounding like a premium OD (based on a Kalamazoo/Klon type OD sound) when your guitar’s volume is turned down to around 6-8 but then like a classic full-sounding FF fuzz with the guitar at 10. This is not your typical fuzz, but a unique hybrid expressly designed to sound good straight out of the pedal with no additional amp “doctoring” needed – pardon the pun.
